Steve Stroble has written a wonderful historical story that I read over the
holidays and recommend it for all ages. He has done a tremendous amount of
research and I enjoyed it very much.
The story begins with indentured servants who cross the Atlantic in the
1800s to start new lives in America. They earn their time and then are free
to take off on their own. Their first dream was to go to New York City but
after arriving they find that life is not pleasant where it’s overcrowded
and infested with rats and filth.
Like many other people at that time in history, they are lured to the gold
fields of California. Leaving their trades of furniture making and farming
orchards, they dream of a better, richer life. A ton of discoveries wait
the miners of that era. Indians, bad weather, disease, famine, and daily
living expenses are far more than what people knew about until they got
underway in their new adventures. To make things worse, many new paths were
just being made and the going was rough. The leaders suggested that they
leave behind many personal items and replace them when they arrived at their
destinations. Many do so and find it almost impossible to replace them
because of over pricing.
Many people realize that few make it in the gold mining business and leave
the fields returning to what their trades were. Most made good livings in
the Sacramento Valley where the soil was good and the demand is high to the
influx of new dreamers. After many tough lessons, the heroes send for their
families and fulfilled lives.
I liked this book because of all the historical information that the author
worked into a wonderful story.
Enjoy! Paulette L. Harris
Well of course this story deserves five stars. I now see where I can judge this. Good work Steve!
